Gutters and roofline explained
Gutters and roofline parts carry rainwater away and protect vulnerable roof edges. Overflowing or leaking sections should be checked for blockages, poor falls, damaged joints and failing boards.
Problems to look for
You do not need to know the roofing term. Start with the sign you can see and tell us when it appeared.

Water spilling over the front or rear edge can point to leaves, roof moss, poor falls or a blocked outlet.

A low run can hold standing water and pull unions or stop ends away from their seals.
Send a photo of this problem →
Repeated overflow or a leaking union can leave dark rainwater marks below the eaves.
Send a photo of this problem →
Drips at a union may come from a worn seal, thermal movement, damaged clips or poor alignment.

Soft or split timber can mean the fascia and the rafter ends behind it need checked.

We confirm the recommended work after checking the roof, access and surrounding details.
Before we quote
We check the part that looks damaged and the nearby roof details that may be causing or worsening the problem.
01The run should guide water towards the outlet without deep low spots, backfalls or poorly spaced brackets.
02Running outlets, hoppers and downpipes must be clear and able to move roof water away.
03Boards, gutter brackets, soffit ventilation and the eaves behind them are checked for damage.
04Moss, silt and leaves are traced from the gutter into outlets, bends and downpipes.

Roofing knowledge
Rain should run down the slate or tile covering, clear the eaves, enter the gutter and leave through the outlet and downpipe. A fault at any one point can send water onto walls or behind the fascia.

Gutters and roofline FAQs
These answers explain common questions before you request a quote.
It depends on nearby trees, roof moss and the gutter layout. Checking after leaf fall and heavy weather is sensible, particularly when moss or debris is visible.
The gutter may be blocked, sagging, too flat, poorly aligned or feeding an outlet that cannot clear water properly. The downpipe should also be checked.
Yes. Repeated overflow can stain walls, wet masonry and timber, and send water behind the fascia or towards the foundations.
Some joints can be cleaned, resealed or have seals replaced. Cracked, distorted or unsuitable sections may need renewed.
OnPoint RoofCare can assess damaged fascia, soffit and roofline components together with the guttering so the eaves and drainage work as one system.
Water backing up at the outlet, slow drainage, overflow at the top or discharge from a joint can indicate a blockage. Do not work from an unsafe ladder to investigate it.
A local repair may suit one failed joint or bracket. Replacement may be more practical when runs are badly distorted, cracked or repeatedly leaking.
Yes. Loose moss and roof debris can fill gutters and outlets, reduce water flow and contribute to overflow during rain.
