Pitched roofing explained
Slate and tiled roofs need suitable materials, secure fixings and correctly formed ridges, hips, valleys and verges. The repair method depends on the covering and its wider condition.
Problems to look for
You do not need to know the roofing term. Start with the sign you can see and tell us when it appeared.

A moved natural or fibre-cement slate leaves a gap that can expose the underlay to wind-driven rain.

A split clay or concrete tile can allow water below the main roof covering.

Movement along a mortar-bedded or dry ridge can worsen during strong wind and heavy rain.

Valleys carry concentrated rainwater and need sound lining and secure surrounding slates or tiles.

Loose edge tiles, missing mortar or failed dry-verge details can expose the roof to wind-driven rain.

We confirm the recommended work after checking the roof, access and surrounding details.
Before we quote
We check the part that looks damaged and the nearby roof details that may be causing or worsening the problem.
01Repeated slipping may point to nail fatigue, corroded fixings or wider timber-batten problems.
02Material, size, profile, colour, thickness and weathering are considered before replacements are chosen.
03Roof angle, orientation and local wind exposure affect material choice and fixing method.
04The lines where roof slopes meet need secure coverings, sound mortar or dry-fix components and watertight leadwork.

Roofing knowledge
A replacement should suit the existing roof rather than simply look similar from the ground. The material, dimensions, profile, headlap and fixing method all matter.

Pitched roofing FAQs
These answers explain common questions before you request a quote.
Yes, when damage is limited and the surrounding covering and fixings remain sound. Repeated slipping or breakage may indicate a wider problem.
A close match is often possible, but the profile and interlock matter as much as colour. Weathering means a replacement may look different at first.
Broken slates, nail fatigue, fixing failure or deteriorated battens can all cause slippage. Frequent slips across one slope may need broader investigation.
Natural slate is stone with natural variation. Fibre-cement slate is manufactured, lighter and more regular. Each has different fixing and detailing requirements.
Local ridge, hip and valley problems can often be repaired when the surrounding roof is sound. The join and nearby underlay should also be checked.
Where they are safely accessible or exposed during work, their condition can be checked. Hidden layers cannot always be fully assessed beforehand.
Access depends on roof height, pitch, location of the fault and ground conditions. Suitable safe access is confirmed before work begins.
