External wall protection

What Is Roughcasting?

Roughcasting is an external render finish with a deliberately coarse texture. In traditional wet dash, small stones is mixed into the wet render before it is cast onto the wall. In dry dash, clean stone is cast into a fresh coloured receiver coat.

Modern through-coloured and silicone roughcast systems can create a similar textured appearance. The correct build-up depends on the wall background, exposure, existing material and chosen finish. A product name alone does not decide whether a wall is suitable.

Often confused

Roughcasting vs Wall Coating: What Is the Difference?

Both change the outside of a property, but they do different jobs. The condition of the existing wall decides which route is sensible.

01

Roughcasting

Roughcasting forms or renews a textured render layer. Loose material is removed, the background is prepared and the agreed render build-up is applied before the textured finish.

  • Used where the render itself needs repair or renewal
  • Creates a coarse wet-dash, dry-dash or modern roughcast finish
  • Requires suitable preparation and weather conditions
02

Wall coating

A wall coating is normally a thinner protective or decorative finish applied over a sound, suitable existing surface. It should not be used to hide hollow, loose or badly cracked roughcast.

  • Used on a stable surface that can accept the chosen coating
  • May change colour and improve surface water shedding
  • Does not replace necessary render or masonry repairs

Finish options

Types of Roughcasting for Scottish Homes

The names can overlap in everyday use. We identify the existing finish and wall condition before discussing repair or renewal.

Wet-Dash Roughcast

Small small stones is mixed with the binder and cast onto the prepared wall. This is commonly called wet dash or harling in Scotland.

Dry Dash or Pebble Dash

Clean small stones is thrown into a fresh receiver coat. The stone remains visible and creates the finished colour and texture.

Through-Coloured or Silicone Roughcast

Modern specialist systems can provide a textured, coloured finish. Base coats, primers, receivers and application conditions must follow the selected system.

Details That Can Cause Roughcast to Fail

Cracks and loose render are not always only a surface problem. We look at the wall itself and the places where rainwater reaches it.

Gutters and downpipes

Overflowing gutters, leaking joints and cracked downpipes can keep one wall area wet.

Windows, doors and roof joins

Open seals, failed sills and roof-to-wall details can direct water behind the finish.

Ground level and wall base

Splashback, raised paths and weak bottom of the wall details can contribute to low-level staining or breakdown.

Movement and previous patches

Recurring cracks or mismatched repairs may need closer investigation before another surface treatment.

Roughcasting FAQs

Roughcasting Questions and Answers

These answers explain the main differences and the checks needed before work is agreed.

Can you see cracks or loose roughcast?● Send us a wall photo
What is the difference between roughcasting and wall coating?+

Roughcasting forms or renews a textured render layer on the wall. A wall coating is normally a thinner protective or decorative finish applied over a suitable existing surface. Loose or failed roughcast needs repaired before any coating is considered.

What types of roughcast are available?+

Common options include wet-dash roughcast, dry-dash or pebble-dash finishes, and modern through-coloured or silicone roughcast systems. The wall background, exposure and desired finish guide the choice.

Can damaged roughcast be patched?+

A local repair may be practical when failure is limited and the surrounding finish remains secure. Texture and colour can weather differently, so an exact invisible match cannot be promised.

Does cracked roughcast always need replaced?+

Not always. The crack pattern, movement, hollow areas and moisture source need checked before deciding between local repair and wider renewal.

Can roughcasting help stop penetrating damp?+

A sound external finish can help shed rain, but damp may also come from gutters, downpipes, roof joins, openings, ground levels or internal moisture. The cause should be identified rather than covered over.

Can roughcasting be completed in wet or freezing weather?+

Application depends on the product, temperature, wind, rain and drying conditions. Work should follow the selected system's requirements.
