Sarking and roof timbers FAQs

Sarking & Roof Timber Repairs Questions and Answers

These answers explain common questions before you request a quote.

Can you see a roofing problem?● Send us a photo
What is roof sarking?+

Sarking is timber boarding fixed over rafters beneath the roof underlay and outer covering. It is common in Scottish roof construction.

Can rotten sarking be repaired locally?+

Local replacement may be possible when damage is limited and the supporting structure is sound. The true extent may only appear after the covering is lifted.

Does wet timber always need replaced?+

Not automatically. The source, duration, strength and condition of the timber need to be assessed after it can dry or be exposed.

When is a structural engineer needed?+

Significant movement, widespread decay or concern about rafters, trusses or load-bearing members may require specialist structural advice.
